So
today, on the 21st of April, Indonesia commemorates a day called the Kartini Day. We celebrate this day in honour of one of our National
Patriots, Raden Ajeng Kartini. On this Kartini Day, students usually wear their
respective traditional costumes. So if you live in Java then you have to wear
the Javanese surjan (if you’re a boy) or kebaya (if you're a girl). Not only
that. Usually schools celebrate this day by having a few internal competitions
(only the students in that school are allowed to participate, so it's not
public). For example, my school had a dimas-diajeng competition, a photography
competition etc. If you're wondering what a dimas-diajeng competition is then
you might wanna google that because I honestly don't wanna bother explaining it
(hahaha, sorry guys). But anyway, it was fun. Oh, I forgot to tell you that
before all of this started, in the morning, we had a flag assembly ceremony as
a tribute to R. A. Kartini. But the thing is, the students in my school weren't
really following this ceremony (not seriously at least). Most of them were
chatting on their own instead of paying attention to the speaker in front. As
an Indonesian, I absolutely feel ashamed of this.
I think
Kartini is one of those humans who had the courage to sacrifice a lot of things
for her people (in this case the indigenous women). She saw the fact that those
Indonesian women can't get education, she bothered to put her mind into it, and
in the end she fought hard to find the solution. For me, those kind of people,
the people who dare to make sacrifices for those other than him are hard to
find (especially nowadays). Those amazing selfless people. Let us not let
Kartini's sacrifice go in vain. Let's not forget what she taught us.
Selflessness, courage, patience, and those other good qualities. Let's use em
to move ourselves and the people around us to a better place.
